THE HOLLYWOOD SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCES ITS 2002
CONTEST WINNERS!!!

The Hollywood Symposium takes great pleasure in announcing the
winners of its 2002 contest. Our heartfelt congratulations to our
winning screenwriters, five honorable mentions, and all finalists.

In addition to THS cash awards, software, and Symposium promotion, our
co-sponsor Writers Script Network will place the three winning scripts
on their password protected website for professional industry contacts,
and the three top winners will receive a free subscription to MovieBytes'
Who’s Buying What.   www.writersscriptnetwork.com. www.moviebytes.com

So far, fourteen former Hollywood Symposium Screenplay Contest finalists
and winners (that have informed us of their achievements) have either sold
screenplays, found representation, or been hired to write scripts. We warmly
congratulate our 2002 contest finalists, honorable mentions, and winners.
We welcome them--along with many of our other entrants--into the ranks
of writers approaching the professional level.

The Hollywood Symposium went looking for good stories well told. This is
where we found them.

FIRST PLACE: "The Flesh Trade," written by Michael O’Hare, zayets@earthlink.net
A hopeful young Russian woman struggles to reach America and
follow her dreams, but she becomes ensnared by the underworld,
and sold into slavery. Her harrowing fight for freedom turns into
a life or death struggle.    $3,000 PRIZE

SECOND PLACE: "40 Acres and a Mule," written by David Rakowiecki,
drakowiecki@earthlink.net

A band of ex-slaves in the post-Civil War south become outlaws as
they search desperately for the mythical settlement called Homestead,
where they believe black people can finally live in peace, freedom and
        equality.          $500 PRIZE

THIRD PLACE: "Suck," written by Robert Dorian,
rodor1@earthlink.net

After a rash of grisly murders near her home, an emotionally disturbed
young woman suspects that the beautiful stranger her father has taken
in may actually be a vampire.
        $200 PRIZE

HONORABLE MENTION (alphabetical by author):

"The Clear Horizon," written by Bill Flannigan, w.flannigan@attbi.com
A film noir about a defense lawyer who fakes his own suicide in order
to escape the mob. The FBI agent who sees through the ploy and sets
out to track him down is his childhood best friend.

"The Governor’s Daughter," written by Tammy A. Gaudy,
tgaudy@markivauto.com
State Governor Amanda Sawyer faces her most terrifying challenge
when her daughter is abducted by a desperate father who is out to
save his son, a convicted rapist and murderer, from impending
execution.

"Venus 104," written by Ellen Maguire,
em218@columbia.edu
When a "blocked" young artist pursues a magnificent older woman,
she inspires him to create his very best painting--but breaks his heart
when she falls in love with his married sister.

"Dreams in the Dust," written by Mike Theobald,
drivingforce@chariot.net.au
An Australian farmer’s son enters a footrace in desperate need of
the prize money to save his family’s home from the bank. To his
shock, the only person who can help him train with any real chance
at winning is the town drunk.

"American Jihad," written by D. Clayton Wold,
dclayton@compuplus.net
A stockbroker interested only in his own career discovers that
his newest career-making client is actually involved in an
international financial conspiracy that could destroy America
and start World War III.

Our most sincere thanks to everyone who participated. We hope to see you all again next year with your new or extensively rewritten screenplays!

We are very pleased to announce our finalists
for The Hollywood Symposium Fourth Annual
Screenplay Contest 2002.

We are starting a new direct writer contact policy
and have included email addresses only for those
writers who expressed in writing the wish for us to
do so.
In order for us to keep this list "user friendly"
we have used a grid system.  Email addresses can
be found on the far right.

We are here to promote writers, but we remind all our
finalists that an open contact policy requires some
caution.  Always get a confirmation of credentials
from anyone contacting you and professing to be an
industry professional.

Our congratulations to the finalists, and thank you
to everyone who entered this year.  Keep writing and
keep growing.  We hope to see you all next year.
Winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced
around the end of October.
